Researchers remain puzzled by the mysterious demise of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his spouse, who were discovered lifeless in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, residence. Preliminary autopsy examinations have not confirmed the cause of their deaths but have dismissed carbon monoxide poisoning as a factor, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff.

The investigation revealed that the bodies, found Wednesday, indicated the couple had died several days prior. Notably, there were no indicators of foul play. Sheriff Adan Mendoza disclosed these findings during a press conference, emphasizing that no carbon monoxide presence was detected by the medical examiner. This hazardous gas, both colorless and odorless, can originate from household fuel sources and could prove lethal if confined within unventilated spaces.

Specifically, at the age of 95, Hackman’s pacemaker ceased operation on February 17, suggesting his death may have occurred nine days before the discovery of the bodies. He was discovered in the entrance of their home, while his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, was found in the bathroom. A space heater was positioned close to her, and scattered pills were located beside an open prescription bottle. Investigators theorize the heater might have been knocked down during her fall.

Pending toxicology reports will ultimately determine if the pills or any other substances played a role in their demise. Dr. Michael Baden, an esteemed medical examiner, explained that while environmental carbon monoxide might dissipate, traces do not vanish from a body, ruling it out as the cause. The examination will focus on available tissue and fluid samples to ascertain the death causes.

Dr. Philip Keen, formerly with Maricopa County, Arizona, noted that although a pacemaker failure might indicate death, it isn’t definitive, as some pacemakers are supplementary rather than essential. The initial autopsy reported no external trauma, and Dr. Victor Weedn, a forensic pathologist, mentioned that bodies might fall without evident injuries due to various reasons, including sudden illness.

Investigators continue to piece together details by reviewing the couple’s communications and speaking with acquaintances. Sheriff Mendoza highlighted their private lifestyle as a challenge in establishing a timeline of their final days. Efforts are hindered by the apparent lack of home surveillance footage.

In searches, authorities retrieved medication for various ailments, including high blood pressure and thyroid issues. Court filings indicated the deaths required a comprehensive investigation, though no gas leaks were detected. It was a maintenance worker conducting routine duties who first sounded the alarm when unable to access the home.

Gene Hackman, a prominent figure in acting since the 1960s, achieved considerable acclaim, including two Oscars for his work in “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” Hackman, who led a quiet life with Arakawa in New Mexico since the late 1980s, seldom participated in Hollywood’s social scene, focusing instead on personal interests and residing in their scenic home with their beloved German shepherds.
