GLENDALE, Ariz. — Japanese baseball sensation Roki Sasaki has made a surprising revelation — he is now married, a fact that even took Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts by surprise.
During a conversation on Friday, Roberts expressed his astonishment when asked if he had purchased a wedding gift for Sasaki. “What? I didn’t know he had a girlfriend,” the manager responded, adding, “Well, congratulations. … The wedding gift will be on the way, after I meet his wife.”
Sasaki announced his marriage via an Instagram post, written in Japanese. While he did not disclose the name of his wife or provide details about the wedding’s location or date, he did confirm that she is not a public figure.
The announcement came as a surprise during the Dodgers’ spring training, echoing a similar situation from a year prior when two-way star Shohei Ohtani revealed his own marriage. Last year at spring training, Ohtani shocked the organization with a marriage announcement through his Instagram, later disclosing that his spouse was a former professional basketball player from Japan about two weeks afterward.
Sasaki is a recent addition to the Dodgers, having signed a minor league contract that includes a $6.5 million signing bonus as an international amateur free agent, in compliance with Major League Baseball regulations.
Prior to joining the Dodgers, he played for the Chiba Lotte Marines in the Pacific League, leaving under the posting system. If he had waited an additional two years, Sasaki could have potentially secured a nine-figure contract as a free agent, which would not have been subject to signing bonus pools.
