JUPITER, Fla. — On Thursday, the Miami Marlins announced they had acquired right-handed relief pitcher Seth Martinez through waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Martinez found himself designated for assignment earlier in the week as the Diamondbacks completed a one-year contract with right-hander Kendall Graveman valued at $1.35 million, which could increase to $3.3 million with performance incentives.
The 30-year-old pitcher was picked up by Arizona off waivers from the Houston Astros after the conclusion of the last season. In the 2024 season, he posted a 3.59 earned run average (ERA) over 44 appearances for Houston. Overall, since making his major league debut in 2021, he has compiled a record of 6-6 with a 3.93 ERA across 111 games.
To create space on their roster for Martinez, the Marlins placed right-hander Eury Pérez on the 60-day injured list. Pérez is currently in recovery following Tommy John surgery that he underwent last April. During his debut season in 2023, Pérez managed to achieve a record of 5-6 and a noteworthy 3.15 ERA over 19 starts.
This move reflects the Marlins’ strategy to bolster their bullpen while managing the challenges posed by player injuries. With the addition of Martinez, the team hopes to enhance their pitching depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.
