WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Washington Nationals have reached an agreement with reliever Lucas Sims on a one-year contract valued at $3 million, the team confirmed on Wednesday.
In another move, the Nationals have placed right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson on the 60-day injured list as he continues to recover from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
Sims, who is 30 years old, recorded a record of 1-6 with a 4.38 ERA over 58 relief appearances last season, playing for both Cincinnati and Boston, who acquired him in a trade on July 30. Across his eight-year major league career, Sims has a record of 22-19 with a 4.50 ERA and tallied 12 saves while playing for teams including Atlanta (2017-2018), the Reds (2018-2024), and the Red Sox. He has also achieved 353 strikeouts in 306 innings pitched.
His addition is part of a broader strategy by the Nationals to bolster their pitching staff this offseason, which also includes the signings of Michael Soroka, Shinnosuke Ogasawara, and Jorge López.
The Nationals are coming off a disappointing performance, finishing with a 71-91 record for the second consecutive year. This marks their fifth consecutive losing season since their triumphant run to the World Series title in 2019.
