AKRON, Ohio — In an exciting matchup on Tuesday night, Akron triumphed over Northern Illinois with a score of 73-63, marking their 14th consecutive victory.
Tavari Johnson and Shammah Scott were pivotal for the Zips, each contributing 15 points to the team’s success. Johnson also grabbed six rebounds, while Scott showcased an impressive shooting performance, hitting 5 of 7 from the field, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, and converting 3 of 4 from the free-throw line. Additionally, Scott pulled down five rebounds. Nate Johnson added to the score with 14 points, managing to shoot 5 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 6 from the charity stripe.
On the opposing side, Quentin Jones led the Huskies with a standout performance, scoring 28 points, pulling down seven rebounds, and recording three steals. Kailon Nicholls contributed with 11 points, while Tsvet Sotirov chipped in six points and two steals. Unfortunately for Northern Illinois, this defeat extended their losing streak to seven games.
The first half saw Tavari Johnson putting nine points on the board, but the Zips went into halftime down 31-28. The second half marked a strong comeback for Akron as Scott added 12 points to his tally.
Looking ahead, both teams are scheduled to play again on Saturday; Akron is set to face off against Ohio, while Northern Illinois will take on Eastern Michigan at home.
