LAVAL, Quebec — A stellar performance by Maddie Rooney, who recorded 21 saves, propelled the Minnesota Frost to a decisive 4-0 victory over the Montreal Victoire, who have been dominating the league, on Tuesday night. This match marked Rooney’s first shutout of the season.
Denisa Krizova played a crucial role in securing the win, netting two goals, one of which was an empty-netter, while Liz Schepers and Kendall Coyne Schofield also contributed to the scoreline for Minnesota. With this win, the Frost not only put an end to their recent three-game slump, but they also snapped the Victoire’s six-game winning streak.
The victory allowed the Frost to claim second place in the six-team PWHL, boasting 29 points that currently place them five points behind Montreal, although the Victoire have two games yet to play. Coyne Schofield has now tied with Toronto’s Hannah Miller as the league’s top scorer, each accumulating 18 points, with Coyne Schofield tallying eight goals and ten assists.
The match at Place Bell marked the first time this season that Montreal was held scoreless, as they played before a crowd of 6,696 fans. Montreal’s goalkeeper, Elaine Chuli, faced 24 shots during her fifth appearance of the season.
Analyzing the game, the Frost effectively closed down their defense after conceding 15 goals in their prior three outings. The Victoire initially began the match strongly but quickly lost momentum as Rooney continued to deny their scoring attempts. The Victoire only managed to record three shots during a challenging second period, following a more promising nine in the first.
A pivotal moment came when the Frost stifled the Victoire’s power play for the third time with 9:51 left in the game. Shortly after the penalty expired, Krizova took advantage, scoring and extending the lead to 3-0.
On a key note, the Frost just concluded their most extensive road trip in franchise history, covering nearly 3,000 miles over an 11-day stretch that included stops in Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, and Montreal.
Next on the schedule, the Frost will face the Toronto Sceptres at home on Sunday, while the Victoire will head to Ottawa to clash with the Charge on Saturday.
