WATERBURY, Conn. — A man from Connecticut has admitted to murder related to the tragic death of the mother of a Puerto Rican Olympic competitor.
Jasper Greene, hailing from New Haven, was one of three individuals facing charges for the death of Mabel Martinez Antongiorgi, who was killed on April 9, 2022. The 56-year-old victim was sewing at her residence in Waterbury when a stray bullet penetrated the wall, striking her fatally in the head.
Martinez Antongiorgi’s daughter, Yarimar Mercado Martinez, represented Puerto Rico in the Olympics, competing in both the 2016 Games and the delayed 2020 Games due to the pandemic. At the time of her mother’s death, the athlete was in Brazil participating in another sporting event.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, Greene is set to face a prison sentence of 35 years for the murder; however, he reserves the right to petition for a reduced term of 30 years at his sentencing on June 3, as confirmed by court officials in Waterbury. The murder charge in Connecticut mandates a minimum sentence of 25 years. Charges against Greene have been dismissed in accordance with this plea deal.
Details revealed during the trial indicated that the shooting was linked to a confrontation involving Franklin Robinson, 41, another suspect, who reacted to a stranger greeting his girlfriend. Robinson, Greene, and another accomplice opened fire on a vehicle parked near the residence of Martinez Antongiorgi, mistakenly believing the man was inside. The third suspect, Levi Brock, has pleaded not guilty to various charges, including murder, and is currently awaiting his trial.
Additionally, one more individual who was near the scene was injured but has fortunately survived the incident.
