SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Willy Adames has been gearing up for spring training for some time now. Having spent about a month training in Arizona, he’s eagerly embracing his new journey with the San Francisco Giants.
Even with the added preparation, he found excitement in the team’s first full-squad workout on Monday. “When you practice every day, you reach a point where you just want spring training to commence,” Adames expressed. “So I’m thrilled today marks the beginning. I’ve got no complaints; it’s been fantastic.”
The Giants made a significant move in acquiring Adames during the offseason, especially after finishing last year with an 80-82 record. The experienced shortstop secured a substantial seven-year deal worth $182 million in free agency, parting ways with Milwaukee after over three seasons.
Transitioning to a new organization can be a formidable task, particularly under the weight of a hefty contract. However, Adames is drawing on his past experiences to navigate this change. “Having been traded twice, I think it’s easier for me to connect with everyone and find my footing,” he shared, noting his success during live batting practice on Monday. “That’s why I made it a point to spend the last month here to build relationships with the team before spring training.”
At 29 years old, Adames started as a minor league talent in Detroit’s system before being traded to Tampa Bay in July 2014 as part of a multifaceted deal. He broke into the major leagues in 2018 and spent over three fruitful seasons with the Rays before moving to Milwaukee in May 2021.
During his tenure with the Brewers, Adames emerged as one of baseball’s premier shortstops. Last season, he achieved career-bests in several categories, including 32 home runs, 112 RBIs, 93 runs, 153 hits, and 21 stolen bases over 161 games.
