CAIRO — On Sunday, Egypt declared that it will organize an urgent Arab summit scheduled for February 27. This meeting aims to address “new and dangerous developments” following a controversial proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the resettlement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
Trump’s suggestion, which arose during a recent meeting at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has sparked outrage across the Arab world, including nations like Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, which are considered crucial allies of the United States.
Both Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Jordanian King Abdullah II have expressed their rejection of Trump’s proposal to relocate 1.8 million Palestinians currently living in Gaza, along with the idea of the U.S. taking control over the territory. Despite this backlash, Trump maintains his belief that these nations will ultimately come to accept his vision.
According to a statement released by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, the upcoming Arab League summit in Cairo will take place after recent high-level discussions among Arab nations, including input from the state of Palestine, which has called for the gathering to address the pressing issues surrounding the Palestinian predicament.
