In a thrilling finish at the Qatar Masters held in Doha, Li Haotong clinched victory after sinking a birdie putt from 15 feet on the final hole, marking his fourth triumph on the European Tour.
The Chinese golfer, who is currently ranked No. 300, expressed his emotions with a jubilant roar, raising his fists in celebration and embracing his caddie in tears following his winning stroke at Doha Golf Club. This dramatic finish prevented Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen from Denmark from forcing a playoff.
Li, who started the final round with a lead, carded a 3-under 69, wrapping up the tournament with a total score of 16-under par. Neergaard-Petersen finished strong as well, shooting a remarkable 65 but ultimately fell short, placing him in second. Brandon Robinson Thompson’s score of 70 left him in third, two shots behind Neergaard-Petersen.
Reflecting on his victory, Li acknowledged the pressures he faced leading up to the tournament’s conclusion. “I never thought I could come back in this position,” he remarked, recalling how stressed he felt that morning prior to the final round. His previous win was back in June 2022 when he topped the BMW International Open.
The Qatar Masters wraps up an exciting sequence of four events in the Middle East, with the European Tour set to continue in Kenya from February 20 to 23. This victory marks a significant milestone for Li as he aims to build on this success in future competitions.
