AKRON, Ohio — In a solid display of teamwork and skill, Tavari Johnson scored 20 points, leading the Akron Zips to an impressive 80-65 victory over South Alabama on Saturday.
Johnson also contributed to the defense, securing three steals for the Zips, who now boast an impressive record of 18 wins and 5 losses, with an undefeated 10-0 performance in the Mid-American Conference.
Seth Wilson played a crucial role as well, adding 14 points to the scoreboard, with an efficient shooting performance of 5 for 8, including a remarkable 4 for 7 from the three-point line.
Bowen Hardman also made significant contributions, finishing with 12 points after hitting 4 of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc. The team has now extended its winning streak to 11 games, demonstrating their dominance in recent competitions.
On the other side, the Jaguars from South Alabama, holding a record of 16 wins and 9 losses and 8-4 in the Sun Belt Conference, were led by Barry Dunning Jr. He had an outstanding game, achieving a double-double with 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Elijah Ormiston added some support with 15 points, while Judah Brown chipped in 10 points for the Jaguars.
The Zips took control of the game late in the first half, gaining the lead with 9:42 remaining. They maintained their advantage and went into halftime with a score of 36-30, with Johnson contributing 11 points by that point.
In the second half, Akron steadily built on their lead, going up 50-37 thanks to a decisive 9-0 scoring run. Hardman emerged as a key player during this period, leading the team with nine points after the break, helping to secure the win.
Looking ahead, Akron is scheduled to play again on Tuesday against Western Michigan at home, while South Alabama will be hosting Marshall on Thursday.
