On Sunday, a Taliban fighter attacked a United Nations compound in Kabul, leading to minor injuries for a security guard. The U.N. mission in Afghanistan reported the incident on Monday, stating that the assailant opened fire from outside the compound’s perimeter wall.
According to the U.N., the gunfire was aimed at a guard post, but the security personnel contracted by the U.N. did not return fire during the altercation. One of the international guards was slightly injured and subsequently received medical attention.
Following the incident, the Taliban fighter was discovered deceased in an area outside the compound. The circumstances surrounding his death were not disclosed in the U.N.’s statement.
Both the U.N. and the Taliban are conducting independent investigations regarding the event. Abdul Mateen Qani, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, categorized the incident as a result of a “one-way misunderstanding,” though he did not provide further details. He confirmed the reported injuries and stated that the ministry dispatched medical and forensic teams to the location.
