EASTON, Pa. — In an exciting match on Wednesday night, Matt Rogers scored 21 points, leading American University to a 75-68 triumph over Lafayette.
Rogers contributed significantly to the Eagles’ success, also grabbing eight rebounds for the team, which now boasts a 13-9 overall record and stands at 7-2 in the Patriot League.
Greg Jones played a key role as well, achieving 17 points by shooting four from eight on field goals, including three out of four from the three-point line, and finishing a perfect six for six at the free-throw line. Colin Smalls also made his mark by scoring 14 points, hitting six of 11 shots from the field, although he was one for four from long range. This victory marks the sixth consecutive win for the Eagles.
On the other side, the Leopards, with a record of 8-14 and 3-6 in the league, were led by Justin Vander Baan, who finished the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Alex Chaikin also contributed to the scoring with 15 points, while Caleb Williams rounded out the Leopards’ effort with 10 points and two steals.
American made a significant jump in the game, transforming a lead of just five points into a commanding 15-point advantage thanks to a 10-0 run during the first half. Jones was instrumental during this stretch, scoring eight points before the halftime buzzer rang, allowing the Eagles to hold a narrow 33-31 lead going into the break. The pivotal moment of the game came when Jones, with just 1:18 left in the second half, sunk a crucial three-pointer to give American the lead for good at 65-63.
