Jaland Lowe led the Pittsburgh Panthers to a much-needed victory by scoring 22 points, while Ishmael Leggett contributed 16 points to help the team break their four-game losing streak with a 77-73 win against Syracuse on Saturday.
Contributing to the Panthers’ solid performance, Cameron Corhen added 12 points, and both Zack Austin and Damian Dunn, coming off the bench, scored 10 points each. The Panthers finished the game shooting 45.9%, making 28 out of 61 attempts.
On the opposing side, J.J. Starling scored 16 points for Syracuse, while Lucas Taylor and Chris Bell, who also came off the bench, each contributed 12 points. Eddie Lampkin Jr. had a strong night with not only 10 points but also a remarkable 23 rebounds, marking a personal best, with eight of those coming on the offensive end. Reserve player Petar Majstorovic added another 10 points for the Orange. Syracuse managed to shoot 40.3%, with 27 baskets made out of 67 attempts.
In a tense finish, Austin secured the win for Pittsburgh by sinking two free throws with just six seconds remaining, bringing the score to 77-73. Prior to that, Majstorovic had narrowed the score with a layup, making it 75-73. Earlier, after Bell had cut the deficit with a three-pointer, Lowe responded by hitting two free throws, pushing the score to 73-71.
Dunn’s jumper with 5:51 left in the game marked Pitt’s largest lead at 63-55, but Syracuse managed to keep the game close after leading 33-32 at halftime.
Looking ahead, the Panthers are set to host North Carolina on Tuesday, while Syracuse will travel to Stanford to take on the Cardinal on Wednesday.
