LOS ANGELES — Reliever Tanner Scott has officially signed a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers valued at $72 million, which includes a significant $21 million in deferred payments.
The agreement, which was disclosed on Thursday, features a $20 million signing bonus. This bonus will be disbursed in four equal payments, beginning February 1 and continuing annually through 2028.
Scott’s salary structure includes $11 million for each of the first two years, followed by $15 million in 2027 and 2028. A portion of his salary, specifically $5.25 million each year, will be deferred.
Furthermore, his contract has a conditional option for the 2029 season, set at $5 million. This option can be exercised only if Scott is injured and has not been traded. If he plays during that option year, he may also qualify for up to $4 million in performance incentives. These include potential earnings of $1.5 million based on games played: $500,000 if he appears in 67 games and $1 million if he meets the 72-game mark. Additionally, he could earn $2.5 million tied to games finished, receiving $750,000 for finishing 30 and 35 games, and $1 million for finishing 40 games.
In the event of a trade, Scott would receive a one-time assignment bonus of $3 million. The contract also provides him with a hotel suite during road games, and he has pledged to donate 1% of his earnings to the team’s charitable initiatives.
The Dodgers are making substantial financial commitments, totaling $452 million across eight players after securing their second World Series title in five years.
At 30 years old, Scott had an impressive showing last season, achieving his first All-Star selection. He finished the year with a record of 9-6, a 1.75 ERA, and 22 saves from 24 save opportunities while playing for Miami and San Diego, the latter of which he joined on July 30. Across 72 innings, he struck out 84 batters and issued 36 walks.
Over his career, Scott has compiled a record of 31-24, with a 3.56 ERA and 55 saves, having played for Baltimore (2017-2021), Miami (2022-2024), and San Diego.
In the aftermath of their championship win, the Dodgers have secured several key players, including utilityman Tommy Edman with a five-year deal worth $74 million, outfielder Teoscar Hernández on a three-year contract valued at $66 million, and right-hander Blake Treinen for $22 million over two seasons.
Other notable additions this offseason include left-hander Blake Snell with a $182 million contract for five years, outfielder Michael Conforto at $17 million for one year, and second baseman Hyeseong Kim at $12.5 million for three years. They have also reportedly reached a minor league deal with right-hander Roki Sasaki, which includes a $6.5 million signing bonus.
Throughout the 2023-24 offseason, the Dodgers are set to invest more than $1.3 billion across five players, notably signing two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani for $700 million over ten years, as well as right-handers Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow for $325 million (12 years) and $136.5 million (five years), respectively. Catcher Will Smith also secured a ten-year, $140 million contract.
The Dodgers will additionally incur release fees amounting to $50,625,000 to Japanese clubs for Yamamoto and $1,625,000 for Sasaki.
