The New York Islanders have reached an agreement to bring in experienced defenseman Tony DeAngelo for the remainder of the season.
This signing was officially announced on Friday and involves a prorated amount of the NHL minimum salary, which stands at $775,000, applicable for the upcoming games.
However, before he can join the Islanders’ roster, DeAngelo will need to clear waivers.
DeAngelo’s addition comes as the team looks to cover for the absence of Noah Dobson, who is sidelined with a lower-body injury sustained in a recent victory against Columbus and is expected to be out for an extended period.
Known for his offensive capabilities, DeAngelo is anticipated to play a crucial role in enhancing the team’s power play, which is currently at the bottom of the league, operating at just 12.5%.
Prior to joining the Islanders, DeAngelo recorded six goals and 26 assists over 34 games while playing for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL.
His contract with the KHL team was mutually terminated earlier this month, allowing him to transition back to North America.
At 29 years of age, DeAngelo previously played for the Carolina Hurricanes, where he tallied three goals and eight assists across 31 games last season.
His career statistics reflect a total of 48 goals and 162 assists over 371 games, having played for teams such as Arizona, the New York Rangers, the Hurricanes, and Philadelphia.
DeAngelo’s history with the Rangers spanned four seasons before his departure during the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season, following an incident involving teammate and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.
Currently, the Islanders find themselves in 15th place within the Eastern Conference standings, trailing Columbus by eight points for the second wild card spot in the conference.
