CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In an impressive performance, freshman Dani Carnegie delivered a remarkable season-high of 29 points, while teammates Kayla Blackshear and Tonie Morgan achieved double-doubles, helping the No. 18 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets secure a 75-62 win against the Virginia Cavaliers on Thursday evening.
This victory marked Georgia Tech’s first triumph in Charlottesville since 2015, overcoming a streak of three consecutive losses at the John Paul Jones Arena. The Yellow Jackets improved their overall record to 17-3 and 5-3 in the ACC.
Georgia Tech established a commanding lead early, closing the first quarter on a run scoring the last 15 points for a 21-6 advantage. By halftime, the Yellow Jackets had extended their lead to 36-24, even holding a 20-point advantage during the second quarter.
Virginia fought back in the fourth quarter, with Breona Hurd and Kymora Johnson contributing 15 of the team’s 18 points in that period. This surge allowed the Cavaliers to reduce the gap, bringing the score to 64-62 with just 3:26 left on the clock. However, Virginia then came up empty during their next six offensive possessions, allowing Morgan to break Georgia Tech’s field-goal drought.
Carnegie shone with her five three-pointers, complemented by a stellar 10 of 11 from the free-throw line, along with a significant nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Blackshear and Morgan each made notable contributions: Blackshear finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Morgan notched 11 points and delivered 11 assists. Ariadna Termis also scored 11 points for the Yellow Jackets, who celebrated their second conference road victory of the season. Morgan’s performance came shortly after achieving her first career triple-double, making her the first Yellow Jacket to do so since 2002.
For Virginia, Johnson led the scoring with 22 points, while Hurd added 16 points to the tally. Latasha Lattimore rounded out the contributors with a double-double, totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds.
In terms of rebounding, Georgia Tech showed its dominance by out-rebounding Virginia 44-30.
Next up, Georgia Tech will face No. 14 Duke at home on Sunday, while Virginia will host Louisville.
