Hungarian authorities probe bomb threats targeting more than 240 educational institutions.

BUDAPEST, Hungary — On Thursday, Hungarian police announced that they are looking into bomb threats that impacted over 240 schools nationwide, leading to the cancellation of classes at several institutions.

The bomb threats came through emails that were identical in content, suggesting they were likely sent by a single individual. Authorities stated that officers have been dispatched to the schools affected by the threats. So far, no explosives or devices have been discovered in any of the locations examined by law enforcement.

Gergely Gulyás, the chief of staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, emphasized that educational activities are continuing smoothly in the majority of schools, allowing administrators the discretion to determine whether students should be sent home.

Gulyás reported that Orbán has been in constant communication with both the interior minister and the head of Hungary’s intelligence services throughout the day. The emails were reportedly sent from multiple email providers, some of which were based abroad. Hungarian authorities are collaborating with secret services in Slovakia, where a similar wave of bomb threats occurred the previous year.

In a related matter, it was reported that numerous schools across approximately a dozen cities in Bulgaria also received bomb threats on Wednesday, as per Bulgarian public broadcaster BNT.
