MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities reported that a suspect involved in a stolen vehicle incident was fatally shot by at least one sheriff’s deputy on Tuesday in Memphis.
According to a spokesperson from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office encountered the suspect in a stolen car while they were attempting to make an arrest close to several businesses in eastern Memphis.
The encounter escalated quickly, resulting in at least one deputy firing their weapon at the individual, who succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the deputies involved.
Specific details surrounding the escalation of the encounter remain unclear, including identifying information such as the names, ages, genders, and races of both the deputies and the deceased suspect. Agents from the TBI are currently gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses in order to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting.
As the investigative body for such law enforcement-related shootings, the TBI will compile their findings and submit a report to the local district attorney. It is then up to that office to determine whether any charges will be filed.
