VATICAN CITY — On Sunday, Pope Francis presided over the baptism of 21 infants in the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, beneath the iconic frescoes painted by Michelangelo. This event has become a cherished annual tradition signaling the conclusion of the Christmas season in Vatican City.

During the ceremony, Pope Francis emphasized the gift of faith that the Lord bestows upon these children, highlighting that they were the central figures of this special day. He expressed the importance of ensuring the comfort of the babies throughout the baptism. “It is vital that these little ones feel secure. If they are hungry, please feed them to prevent any tears. If they feel too warm, make the necessary adjustments,” he mentioned. “Let them feel comfortable, for today, they hold a significant role, and it’s our duty to support them with the Sacrament and our prayers.”

The pontiff took the initiative to personally administer the sacrament to each infant, representing the children of staff members who work at the Vatican.

This occasion coincides with the feast day that commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, a tradition that was initiated by St. John Paul II in 1981.

As part of the ceremony, fathers of the baptized infants were given candles to light, symbolizing the enduring light of Christianity that “must never cease to shine.” The Pope urged families to take these candles home and ignite them during challenging times as a way of seeking divine guidance and support.
