Texans pick off Herbert a personal-best 4 times in a 32-12 victory against Chargers in wild-card playoff matchup.

Texans Surge Past Chargers in Wild-Card Playoff Win

Houston Capitalizes on Turnovers

The Houston Texans set a clear objective for their playoff showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers: force three turnovers per game. On Saturday, they significantly exceeded that target, recording four interceptions, including two by All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley. These efforts propelled the Texans to a decisive 32-12 victory in the wild-card round.

“We came out to play with the mindset of taking the ball away to secure the win,” Stingley remarked after the game. Eric Murray also contributed by returning one of the interceptions for a touchdown, while quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for another touchdown.

Historically, quarterbacks who throw four or more interceptions face dire odds; they hold a record of 55 wins to 551 losses with two ties during the regular season. The playoffs offer even less optimism, with only three wins out of 36 attempts following such performances.

“I disappointed my teammates today,” Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert stated candidly. “Turning the ball over this often makes it nearly impossible to secure a win, and I put us in a challenging position.”

This victory marks the second consecutive year the Texans (11-7) have advanced past the first round, having previously defeated Cleveland. Stroud noted, “This season has had its challenges, but today is a testament to our drive and determination.”

Defensive Dominance

The Texans were relentless in their pursuit of Herbert, sacking him four times and hitting him on nine additional occasions. Stingley was particularly effective, complementing rookie Kamari Lassiter, who also recorded an interception against the Chargers’ quarterback.

“Our defense was outstanding today,” praised Texans coach DeMeco Ryans. “They truly embodied what we want to represent as a team. Their performance was a reflection of our football philosophy.”

Despite making a playoff return under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers (11-7) saw their postseason struggles continue, as they fell in the wild-card round for the second consecutive year, failing to secure a playoff win since 2018. Harbaugh took responsibility for the loss, stating, “The better team won today. I accept full accountability for our performance.”

Stroud’s performance was noteworthy; he threw for 282 yards, including a touchdown pass to Nico Collins and only one interception. With this game, he joins a prestigious group of quarterbacks, such as Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson, who have won playoff games in each of their first two seasons.

Collins set a franchise record for receiving yards in a playoff game, finishing with seven catches for 122 yards. Joe Mixon also made an impact, running for 106 yards and a touchdown, with D’Angelo Ross scoring on a blocked extra point return.

Herbert managed a 40.9 passer rating, completing 14 of 32 passes for 242 yards.

A Rollercoaster Start

The Texans found themselves in a tough spot early in the game, fumbling their first offensive play and trailing 6-0 late in the first half. However, momentum shifted when Stroud connected with Collins for a 13-yard touchdown pass, giving Houston a 7-6 lead after a 41-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn just before halftime.

After taking a 13-6 lead, Murray scored his first career touchdown on a 38-yard interception return in the third quarter. Herbert’s struggles continued as he was intercepted again by Stingley, who secured another pick late in the fourth quarter.

Despite Herbert managing to find Ladd McConkey for an 86-yard touchdown that narrowed the gap to 23-12, a critical blocked extra point returned by Ross added two points to Houston’s score, making it 25-12.

Mixon’s 17-yard run extended the Texans’ lead to 32-12, further solidifying their commanding performance.

The Chargers initially scored first, leading 3-0 after a 39-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker, which came after John Metchie’s fumble on Houston’s opening drive.

Deane Leonard’s interception of Stroud briefly halted the Texans’ momentum, but Lassiter responded with a pick of Herbert on the next play, effectively returning possession to Houston. Stroud and his offense eventually found their rhythm, notably converting a challenging third-and-16 play to ignite a scoring drive.

“That was an incredible play,” Ryans remarked. “It sparked the momentum that carried us forward.” Harbaugh acknowledged the importance of that play as well, noting its significant impact on the game’s dynamic.

The Texans capitalized on their momentum and ensured their advancement to the divisional round for the sixth time in franchise history, where they aim to reach the AFC Championship game for the first time ever. The stage is set for what will undoubtedly be an exhilarating postseason journey ahead.

Injury Update

The Chargers faced some injury setbacks during the game, with linebacker Denzel Perryman sustaining an elbow injury in the first quarter, and cornerback Cam Hart injured his shoulder.
