Update on Wildfires: Over 10,000 buildings destroyed in multiple fires near Los Angeles

Firefighters in the Los Angeles region are facing immense challenges as they combat multiple devastating wildfires that have resulted in seven fatalities and the destruction of over 10,000 structures, stretching from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena. Thankfully, the fierce winds that have contributed to the chaos are beginning to subside; however, meteorologists caution that the high risk of fire weather is expected to persist through Friday.

Despite the somewhat calmer winds, firefighters struggled to contain the blazes that have rapidly spread across the expansive area, particularly the major fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, which continued to rage on Thursday evening.

The mother of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is among those who have lost their home to the wildfires. At 90 years old, Ann Kerr evacuated her Pacific Palisades residence in response to evacuation orders. “My mom is in good hands, but her house is gone,” Kerr commented in a press conference before the Warriors faced off against the Detroit Pistons.

As the crisis escalates, officials have confirmed an increase in the death toll connected to the wildfires. The two main fires in the Los Angeles area have now claimed seven lives, with five fatalities associated with the Eaton Fire by Pasadena and two from the neighboring Pacific Palisades fire. Some containment has reportedly been achieved in the Palisades Fire, which had been active since Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has opted to close all schools and offices on Friday due to the fires. According to Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, classes will remain canceled until conditions improve. He mentioned that the district has suffered losses, including two destroyed elementary schools and significant damage to one high school.

In response to the escalating Kenneth Fire near West Hills, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the deployment of an additional 900 firefighters to assist with the urgent battle against the blaze, which expanded quickly and burned more than a square mile within hours of igniting. Damage assessments from the ongoing Eaton and Palisades fires have confirmed that over 5,300 structures have been impacted by the Palisades Fire, alongside more than 5,000 structures affected by the Eaton Fire.

In the sporting world, the NFL has relocated a playoff game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Rams to Arizona as a precaution due to the ongoing wildfires in Southern California. Although none of the blazes directly threatened SoFi Stadium, potential risks associated with air quality and emergency personnel demands prompted the league’s decision.

Weather conditions remain critical, with the National Weather Service indicating that strong Santa Ana winds will persist into Friday. The danger of high fire weather will continue, leading to heightened concerns in Los Angeles and Ventura County, where firefighters are still working tirelessly.

Additionally, an evacuation alert mistakenly issued to all Los Angeles County residents caused confusion, as it was intended solely for those in the vicinity of the Kenneth Fire. Furthermore, Vice President Kamala Harris has canceled her final overseas trip due to the fires affecting her home state of California.

The economic damage from these wildfires could reach staggering amounts, with estimates from AccuWeather placing it between $135 billion and $150 billion. In a show of solidarity, Canada has expressed its readiness to send military personnel, firefighting equipment, and additional support to assist the U.S. in battling the blazes.

President Biden reassured those affected by the fires that the federal government remains committed to aiding the victims. He announced that federal resources would be available for essential services, including hazardous material removal and temporary shelters. Following the briefings, local authorities implemented a curfew around the major fire areas, aiming to protect neighborhoods during this critical time.

As families contend with the aftermath of the blazes, tragic stories have come to light. One man, Victor Shaw, died while attempting to save his home amidst the flames. In another account, a father and son tragically perished in Altadena, underscoring the perilous conditions created by this disaster.

With the situation still developing, search and rescue operations are set to continue in fires’ aftermath, as officials work to restore basic services to fire-ravaged areas. More than 180,000 residents remain under evacuation orders, while countless responders are diligently focused on rescuing individuals and managing the complex recovery efforts.

The devastation witnessed in recent days has been labeled as some of the worst fires in Los Angeles history, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble and lives irrevocably altered. The community solidarity and support for recovery efforts are critical as Los Angeles faces the road ahead in dealing with these unprecedented wildfires.
