ROME — On Wednesday, Pope Francis expressed his strong condemnation of child labor and the various forms of abuse children face, asserting that those who inflict harm or exploitation on minors will ultimately face judgment from God.
In his first catechism lesson of 2025, he focused on the serious issue of child welfare during his weekly general audience, emphasizing that the community of believers cannot afford to be apathetic towards the ongoing crisis of child labor.
“Children hold a special place in God’s affection, and anyone who causes them harm will be held accountable,” he stated emphatically.
The Pope has consistently voiced his concerns regarding child labor, especially during his international travels. Notably, during his 2023 trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo, he criticized the exploitation of children by foreign entities and mining companies that seek to extract the nation’s valuable resources. He remarked on how such actions exploit the continent for “selfish greed.”
“Consider the countless children who are losing their lives due to famine, disasters, diseases, and armed conflicts,” he urged during his address. “It is imperative that we take decisive actions to prevent and denounce any form of abuse directed at minors.”
While the Pope did not specifically mention the long-standing scandal of sexual abuse within the Church, which has troubled the Catholic community for many years, his message echoed a call for protection of the vulnerable.
During the audience, the 88-year-old pontiff appeared to have a congested voice and departed from his prepared remarks midway through. Despite this, he seemed to find joy in a lively performance by CircAfrica, a circus troupe showcasing African-themed acts. The group, currently performing in Rome, captivated the audience with their acrobatic skills, robotic puppets, jugglers, and roller-skating dancers, providing a vibrant display in the Vatican auditorium.
