Anna Netrebko has made the decision to withdraw from her highly anticipated debut in the role of Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” at the Vienna State Opera. Lise Davidsen will step in to take her place in what has become a notable change in the lineup of star sopranos.
In a statement released on Monday, Netrebko expressed her disappointment, citing that “ill health this month compromised the preparation time required before starting rehearsals just after the new year.” She added, “I am sad that I will not be interpreting this incredible new role but, because of the time unexpectedly lost, I am unable to prepare it to the standard I demand of myself.”
Netrebko began the opera season with a powerful performance in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala, where she portrayed Leonora in Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino” from December 7 to 22.
Lise Davidsen, who has previously debuted in the role of Ariadne at England’s Glyndebourne Festival in 2017, will now perform the role in four performances scheduled from January 21 to 31. The cast will also include notable artists like Michael Spyres, Kate Lindsey, and Sara Blanch, all under the baton of conductor Cornelius Meister.
Netrebko indicated her desire to perform the role in Vienna at a later date, mentioning, “Bogdan Roš?i? and I are working to find a new period as soon as possible for me to sing it in Vienna,” referring to the director of the Vienna State Opera.
Looking ahead, Netrebko’s next performance is planned for a recital in Palm Beach, Florida, on February 3, 2025, marking her return to the U.S. stage for the first time since 2019.
