ATLANTA — On Monday, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers displayed his diplomatic prowess when responding to a challenge from Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt prior to their College Football Playoff quarterfinal clash. Ewers, known for resolving quarterback rivalries with his on-field performance, has helped lead Texas to an impressive 12-2 record. This includes a remarkable playoff victory over Clemson and a crucial Peach Bowl matchup against Arizona State (11-2), despite speculation that he might lose his starting position to backup Arch Manning.
Ewers has thrown for 2,867 yards and amassed 26 touchdowns this season. In reference to Ewers, Leavitt expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to demonstrate that the Sun Devils possess the superior quarterback. Leavitt commented, “I’ve been following him for quite some time and I’m thrilled for the chance. People have doubted me since the beginning, and I’m eager to show why I am the better quarterback.”
The attitude of Arizona State’s players reflects their underdog status, using it as motivation in their unexpected playoff journey. When asked about Leavitt’s bold claim during the Peach Bowl media day, Ewers seemed prepared. “I saw that and congrats to them on a terrific year,” Ewers stated. “I’ve watched some of their games; he’s a talented player, and their offense is exciting. I am really looking forward to facing them.”
Ewers had little to add when questioned about whether Manning’s impressive performances as a substitute created tension between the quarterbacks while Ewers dealt with abdominal strains earlier this season. “No,” was Ewers’ straightforward response. With the strong backing of head coach Steve Sarkisian and his impressive fieldwork, Ewers effectively quelled any uncertainty surrounding who would be leading the Longhorns.
Nonetheless, Manning could play a vital role in Texas’ aspirations for a national title, especially with his abilities as a runner. Texas quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee highlighted the potential of maximizing Manning’s unique skills, saying, “If we have that dynamic, why wouldn’t we use it?”
Although Manning hasn’t thrown a pass in the past five games, he still has posted 939 yards and nine touchdowns this season. He is also a significant contributor in the rushing game, ranking fourth on the team with 100 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Reflecting on his transition to the backup role following his renowned high school career as a Manning, he acknowledged the challenges, sharing, “It’s definitely an adjustment. No one wants to not play, but I’m committed to doing whatever helps the team win, whether playing or not.”
Manning praised Ewers as “a really hard worker” and a “pro,” noting, “I’ve learned a lot from him and his approach to the game.” Ewers echoed this sentiment, expressing that their rapport makes collaboration enjoyable: “We have a good relationship, which makes things easier.”
Milwee also emphasized that Manning should not be classified merely as a backup quarterback due to his running ability. He acknowledged Manning’s successful passing capability demonstrated earlier in the season. “This gives us a weapon that can be used strategically,” Milwee elaborated, suggesting there are various ways they could leverage Manning’s skills.
In injury updates, Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury during the playoff win against Clemson, confirmed he is ready to play against Arizona State. On the other hand, right tackle Cameron Williams reported limited practice participation due to a right knee sprain and mentioned he hasn’t decided on his availability for the quarterfinal matchup.
