AUSTIN, Texas — In a decisive victory on Sunday, junior Kyla Oldacre recorded her personal best of 21 points while demonstrating exceptional accuracy in shooting, as No. 5 Texas overwhelmed Texas Rio Grande Valley with a score of 94-35.
The 6-foot-6 backup center showcased her skills by successfully making all six of her field goal attempts and converting 9 out of 10 free throw attempts. In addition to her scoring efforts, she pulled down seven rebounds and made three of the Longhorns’ impressive total of 21 steals.
Contributing to the victory, Madison Booker delivered a solid performance with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals for Texas, which boosted their season record to 13-1. Starting center Taylor Jones also made her mark with 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
On the other side, Kade Hackerott was the top scorer for Texas Rio Grande Valley (6-7), finishing with seven points. The Vaqueros struggled in their shooting performance, managing to hit only 27% of their shots from the field while also committing a staggering 37 turnovers. Texas capitalized on these missteps and scored 47 points off the turnovers.
In terms of insights, it was highlighted that Texas Rio Grande Valley typically averages 16 turnovers each game, but they reached that number by midway through the second quarter. Their struggles were evident as they managed to commit 13 turnovers while quickly falling behind 24-5 after the first quarter.
For Texas, there are concerns regarding Aaliyah Moore’s well-being. The starting power forward missed her first game of the season due to tendinitis in her right knee, a recurring issue that has hindered her performance in previous seasons. With only two centers and two power forwards on the roster, her health will be closely monitored moving forward.
A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Texas Rio Grande Valley cut a 19-point deficit down to 10 points with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, Texas responded assertively, concluding the half with a 13-1 scoring run, largely fueled by Oldacre’s eight points in the final 2:36.
A key statistic from the match indicated that the Longhorns dominated the paint, outscoring the Vaqueros 54-12, although this margin could have been even greater had Texas not missed 12 layup attempts.
Looking ahead, Texas Rio Grande Valley is set to face Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday, while Texas travels to take on No. 9 Oklahoma on the same day.
