A man was apprehended on the island of Crete under allegations of espionage, according to statements from Greek police on Monday.
The unnamed suspect was detained on Sunday through efforts led by the National Intelligence Service of Greece in collaboration with law enforcement.

Reports in local media have identified the suspect as being of Azerbaijani origin, and stated that he was in possession of a Polish passport at the time of his arrest. It is alleged that he had accumulated a large collection of photographs of military installations and naval vessels.

Crete hosts the United States’ Souda Bay naval base, a critical port in the eastern Mediterranean with capabilities to accommodate large vessels including aircraft carriers, highlighting the strategic importance of the location.

The suspect was presented in court on Monday for an initial hearing. He has been granted a period until Wednesday to organize his defense.
