NEWARK, N.J. — Emerance Maschmeyer delivered an impressive performance with 34 saves out of 35 shots, leading the Ottawa Charge to a 3-1 victory over the New York Sirens on Sunday. This marks Ottawa’s second win in their last six games.
After a 10-day break from play, the Charge opened the scoring in the first period with goals from Emily Clark and Shiann Darkangelo. Kate?ina Mrázová added another goal in the second period, propelling Ottawa to a 3-0 lead by the end of the second period. Notably, the Charge has managed to score three or more goals in each of their five matchups against New York over the past two seasons.
Alex Carpenter contributed an assist in the third period, extending her impressive scoring streak to nine consecutive games, which dates back to the previous season. Meanwhile, Sarah Fillier netted a goal for New York, bringing her points total to eight in her first eight games, thus tying her for the league lead after being drafted first overall by the Sirens.
The defensive strategy employed by Ottawa effectively disrupted New York’s speed advantage, and the Charge’s sturdy penalty-killing unit allowed them to maintain a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. Clark’s goal came early in the game, as she skillfully redirected a wrist shot from Brianne Jenner into the net just six minutes after the puck drop. Although Ottawa scored two goals within the first seven minutes of the second period, they failed to capitalize on two power plays late in that period.
Fillier was quick to make an impact in the third period, scoring just 23 seconds in by launching a shot past Maschmeyer. However, Maschmeyer stood her ground and stopped the next 12 shots, including a tense sequence towards the end of the game when the Sirens pulled their goaltender, Corinne Schroeder, in an attempt to gain a numerical advantage.
Noteworthy for New York, Jill Saulnier was activated off long-term injured reserve after recovering from an upper-body injury sustained during the season opener on December 1.
