In a show of remembrance, Mackenzie Truitt, a 24-year-old resident of Madison, visited the school on Tuesday afternoon to place a red poinsettia plant at a memorial for the victims. Truitt’s brother, a recent graduate of Abundant Life, alerted her about the shooting, mentioning that some of his friends had been harmed, though she opted not to discuss their current conditions. “My heart sank because I know how incredible many of these students are,” said Truitt, emphasizing the fear and anxiety that gripped the community during such a harrowing time.
She recalled the kindness and compassion of the school community and its educators, expressing sorrow over the increasing frequency of such incidents and the declining state of mental health in society. “It seems there’s little that can be done to prevent this,” she remarked.
In a separate statement, Madison’s mayor responded firmly to persistent media inquiries about the identities of those affected. “It is absolutely none of your business who was harmed in this incident,” she asserted, urging respect and sensitivity for those grieving their losses.
City officials, including Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Dane County Executive Melissa Agard, refrained from addressing various questions during a press briefing, including inquiries about the shooter’s possible experiences with bullying and the presence of security personnel at the school. They explained that they were unable to comment as the investigation is ongoing.
