WASHINGTON — In a heartwarming event, it took less than ten minutes for a substantial collection of toys donated by White House staff to be sorted and packed away. First Lady Jill Biden joined children from military families in organizing these gifts as part of the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots initiative, aimed at bringing joy to underprivileged children during the holiday season.

The White House has a longstanding relationship with this charitable campaign, which has been providing assistance to families for an impressive 77 years, according to Lt. Gen. Leonard Anderson IV, commander of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. “We’re making a significant impact right here in the nation’s capital, where these toys will go to kids in need,” he remarked during the gathering hosted by the first lady.

Last year, Toys for Tots distributed more than 25 million toys to over 10 million children across the United States. Anderson expressed optimism about this year’s efforts, suggesting that they are on track to set a new record, which has brought excitement to the organization and its supporters.

While addressing a group of military children gathered in the East Room, adorned with two large, sparkling Christmas trees, Jill Biden conveyed a powerful message of love and support. She shared her connection to the military, noting that her father and late son served. “If you only remember one thing for the holidays, after all the wrapping paper is cleaned up, let it be this: You are loved,” she told the children. “So many people care about you, from your family and friends to your teachers, classmates, and even the president and me.”

Biden encouraged them to share this love: “The best thing we can do with that love is to let it overflow and share it with others who might really need it.” After her heartfelt message, she prompted the children, “Are you guys ready to get sorting?” With enthusiasm, they eagerly moved towards an array of toys including dolls, stuffed animals, sports equipment, vehicles, books, puzzles, and even a unique “Delaware Opoly” board game themed around President Joe Biden’s home state.
