MAINZ, Germany — U.S. midfielder Lennard Maloney, who was born in Germany, has made a move to Mainz from fellow Bundesliga team Heidenheim. This transfer comes after Maloney was removed from the Heidenheim squad last month when he voiced his desire to switch clubs.

At 25 years old, Maloney had notified Heidenheim that he intended to join Mainz once his contract ends at the conclusion of the season. He finally got his wish on Tuesday when both clubs reached an agreement on the transfer.

“Maloney has showcased his abilities in the Bundesliga over the past 18 months,” noted Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert. “He primarily excels in the defensive midfielder role, making him an ideal match for Mainz 05. He brings a strong mentality, works exceptionally hard, and demonstrates skill in winning challenges and aerial duels. His warm and approachable nature will help him integrate seamlessly into our team.”

Maloney has signed a contract extending until 2028. Currently, after 18 league matches, Heidenheim finds itself in the relegation playoff position, while Mainz holds sixth place and remains in contention for European qualification.

Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt remarked in December that Maloney was being benched due to perceived issues with commitment, particularly following several underwhelming performances.

“I need players during this phase who are entirely focused on Heidenheim’s objectives,” Schmidt expressed. “As a coach, I am seeking a different focus and a higher performance level from my vice-captain.”

Maloney, who was born in Berlin, has represented the United States on two occasions, both occurring in 2023.
