In light of the recent severe weather events, small business owners are reminded by the IRS that the tax deadline is approaching for those who were granted extensions due to these natural disasters occurring in 2024.
Small businesses located in specific areas across 14 states and two territories that received extensions to submit their 2023 tax returns are now required to file in 2025. Depending on their geographic location, some businesses must meet a deadline of February 3, while others have until May 1.
The IRS provides tax filing extensions to small businesses impacted by extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or other natural disasters like earthquakes, recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Businesses situated within these designated disaster areas automatically qualify for the extended timeline to file.
Taxpayers residing in Louisiana, Vermont, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, as well as certain regions in Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington, are subject to the earlier deadline of February 3.
Conversely, those taxpayers located in the entirety of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, in addition to parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, will have until May 1 to submit their 2023 tax returns. For these individuals, the May 1 date also applies to filing 2024 returns and settling any tax obligations due.
Moreover, there is a distinct deadline for those who either reside or operate a business in Israel, Gaza, or the West Bank, alongside other individuals affected by the recent acts of terror in Israel. This group has an extended deadline of September 30 to file and pay their taxes, which encompasses all returns from 2023 and 2024.
