Introducing Amy Allen, the talent responsible for the catchy tunes in your mind

NEW YORK — Amy Allen may not be widely recognized just yet, but her songwriting has undeniably made a significant mark on pop music, even catching the eye of the Grammys.

At just 32 years old, Allen has penned several hit songs for big names such as Halsey (“Without Me”), Selena Gomez (“Back to You”), and Tate McRae (“Greedy”). Her impressive contributions to Harry Styles’ album “Harry’s House” helped secure a Grammy win for album of the year in 2023. Her writing credits also include works by Olivia Rodrigo, Charli XCX, Rosé, Reneé Rapp, Shawn Mendes, Leon Bridges, and Justin Timberlake.

However, 2024 has been a pivotal year for Allen, largely due to her partnership with another emerging talent. She co-wrote all 12 tracks on Sabrina Carpenter’s vibrant album “Short n’ Sweet.” The standout track “Espresso” became a summer anthem, catapulting Carpenter to new heights of fame, while the follow-up single “Please Please Please” showcased the lasting appeal of Carpenter’s playful pop style, highlighted by memorable lines such as, “Heartbreak is one thing, my ego’s another / I beg you, don’t embarrass me.”

This autumn, Allen’s achievements propelled her to the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 Songwriters chart for an impressive seven weeks. This accomplishment is especially noteworthy given her competition, which includes artists like Carpenter and Kendrick Lamar.

“Once the songs are out of my hands, I just try to let them go to the world,” Allen remarked, reflecting on the positive reception her work has received.

When the nominations for the 67th Grammy Awards were revealed, Allen was in the middle of a writing session in London. She received the news via text from her manager, announcing four nominations, including a second nod for songwriter of the year in the non-classical category, which for only three years has recognized this talent. A win here would mark her as the first woman to claim this award. Additionally, “Short n’ Sweet” garnered a nomination for album of the year, and “Please Please Please” was recognized as song of the year.

Allen also received a nomination for her contribution to “Better Place,” a collaboration with NSYNC featured in the movie “Trolls: Band Together.”
