RALEIGH, N.C. — In a thrilling Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Saturday, North Carolina State secured an 84-74 victory over Florida State, thanks in part to an impressive overtime effort by Marcus Hill and Dontrez Styles, who contributed a combined 13 points in the extra period.
The Wolfpack kicked off overtime strong, going on a 9-4 run that pushed their lead to 79-72, allowing them to maintain control as they finished out the game. Both Hill and Styles were perfect from the field in overtime, each going 2-for-2. Hill also excelled at the free-throw line, knocking down all four of his attempts and accumulating a total of eight points during the extra session. Styles added a key three-pointer to his total, finishing with five points in overtime.
Overall, Hill had an impressive performance, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and totaling 23 points. Styles contributed significantly as well, making three of the Wolfpack’s eight three-pointers, ending the game with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Jayden Taylor also played a role in the victory, adding 14 points to the team’s score. NC State improved its record to 6-3 and 1-0 in conference play, breaking a three-game losing streak in the process.
For Florida State, Jamir Watkins was the standout, scoring 24 points, while Malique Ewin also made a significant contribution with 23 points. Ewin helped spearhead a late-game surge, scoring the first six points in a 9-2 run that gave Florida State a 66-60 lead with just 3:44 left in regulation. However, NC State responded with a pivotal 10-2 run, which included a three-pointer from Styles, reversing the momentum to hold a 70-68 advantage with 19 seconds remaining. In the final moments, Watkins managed to tie the game with two free throws, sending it into overtime tied at 70.
