While holding onto hope that medical science can help her defeat stage 4 cancer, actress Shannen Doherty is pragmatically preparing for the possibility of death by downsizing her material possessions. The Beverly Hills, 90210 star revealed on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast that she is clearing out her storage unit full of furniture and antiques – a process driven by her desire to ease the burden on her mother Rosa should she ultimately lose her battle.
“It’s going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier,” Doherty explained of prioritizing her mother’s needs. “I don’t want her to have a bunch of stuff to deal with. I don’t want her to have four storage units filled with furniture.”
The 52-year-old plans to sell off her extensive collection of antique items, with the intention of using the money to travel and make memories with her mother. However, she is careful not to dip into her own savings for these trips, as Doherty wants to ensure her loved ones are financially taken care of in the tragic event of her passing.
Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 before going into remission after treatment. Devastatingly, she announced last year that the cancer had returned as stage 4 and spread to her bones. Despite the grim prognosis, the actress has maintained optimism, revealing in January that she underwent a “miracle” new treatment.
While holding out hope that innovative therapies can save her life, Doherty is simultaneously taking practical steps to plan for the worst-case scenario out of consideration for her aging mother. Her downsizing efforts aim to alleviate potential future burdens during an inevitably painful time.
