Countdown to Donald Trump’s 2025 Inauguration: All you need to know

President Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025, marking a stunning political comeback.

The ceremony, set to take place at noon, will draw thousands to the nation’s capital as President Joe Biden, 82, concludes his term and departs the White House.

The historic day will feature traditional inaugural festivities, including a parade, a celebratory luncheon, and glitzy inaugural balls where Trump will share a spotlight dance with First Lady Melania Trump.

When Is the Inauguration?

The 20th Amendment mandates that a president’s term begins at noon on January 20 following an election year unless it falls on a Sunday, in which case it moves to January 21. This year’s ceremony coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but federal workers won’t receive an extra day off.

What to Expect on Inauguration Morning

As per tradition, the Trumps are expected to begin their day with a church service at the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House. The outgoing president typically leaves a letter for the incoming leader on the Resolute Desk, and Biden is expected to do the same for Trump.

Trump broke inauguration tradition four years ago when he skipped Biden’s swearing-in but left a “shockingly gracious” note, according to Biden biographer Chris Whipple.

Tickets and Crowd Expectations

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies makes tickets available to the public through members of Congress. Demand is expected to surpass the supply, as Trump’s popularity among his base has grown. This time, Trump also won the popular vote, a first for a GOP candidate in 20 years.

Trump’s inaugural crowd size became a hot topic in 2017, and his team is already predicting a larger turnout this year. Supporters can also attend an indoor rally at the Capital One Arena on January 19, the day before the swearing-in.

Inaugural Balls: Glitz and Glamour

The inaugural balls will highlight the evening’s festivities, with the president and first lady typically attending the official events. In 2017, the Trumps graced the Liberty and Freedom Balls at the Washington Convention Center and honored the troops at A Salute to Our Armed Services Inaugural Ball.

While details of the 2025 balls are yet to be announced, these events often feature exclusive gatherings for top donors and larger celebrations for supporters. Past inaugurations have seen performances by big names like Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson, though Trump’s events are likely to spotlight MAGA-friendly acts like Kid Rock and prominent country musicians.

A New Chapter for America

As Trump prepares to take the oath of office, Washington, D.C., will be abuzz with activity, from celebratory parades to political gatherings. The day promises to mark not just the start of Trump’s second term but a pivotal moment in American political history.
