Authorities reveal Wisconsin shooter recently enrolled at Christian institution closely linked to her victims.

MADISON, Wis. — A tragic incident unfolded at Abundant Life Christian School when a 15-year-old girl fatally shot a teacher and a fellow student on Monday. The student, Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, had only just begun her first semester at the school but appeared to be integrating well, according to an official statement made by school representatives. As families reflect on the lives lost, they pay tribute to the deeply rooted Christian values held by both the teacher and the student.

The victims were identified as Rubi Patricia Vergara, a 14-year-old student from Madison, and Erin West, a 42-year-old teacher from DeForest. Sadly, two additional students suffered injuries and remained in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon. Barbara Wiers, the school’s director of elementary and communications, shared with the press that the violent event lasted only eight minutes, a timeframe shorter than the usual snack break for students. She emphasized the community’s unity and faith, which continue to support them amid their grief, even as questions about the shooter’s motives linger.

“Are we broken right now? Yes. Are we bruised and battered? Yes,” Wiers acknowledged. “But we will laugh again, and He will turn our mourning into joy again. And we will go on.” Authorities have confirmed that Rupnow shot herself following the attack and succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Investigators are still delving into the motive behind the shooting, which remains a crucial aspect of their ongoing inquiries.

Wiers also noted that this was Rupnow’s introductory semester at ALCS. While the school had been working with her family regarding attendance issues, there had been no major concerns raised by her teachers. “I pray for this family because right now they’ve lost a daughter and they are wounded,” she stated, expressing empathy for the difficult situation faced by Rupnow’s family in light of these events.

Funeral services for Rubi Vergara are scheduled for Saturday at a nearby church, while Erin West’s service will take place on Monday. West had dedicated four years to the school and was the proud mother of three daughters. Her obituary highlighted her love for camping, attending sports events, and participating in church activities, reflecting a life full of love for family and community engagement.

“ALCS is a better school for the work of Erin West,” the institution commented, recognizing her commitment and contributions. West’s diverse roles included serving as a substitute coordinator, where she was known for her grace, humor, and wisdom, all while embodying the love of Christ.

Rubi Vergara, remembered as a passionate reader and a talented artist, was described by the school as kind and nurturing. Her obituary encapsulated her generous spirit, which endeared her to classmates and staff alike. The loss felt by both families and the broader school community is profound and immeasurable.

The incident is further complicated by reports that Rupnow had been in communication with an individual from California regarding intentions to attack a government building. This information emerged following a restraining order issued against the man under California’s gun red flag law. The order mandated him to surrender his firearms and ammunition to law enforcement, though it remains unclear if he complied.

The investigation is now being spearheaded by federal authorities, with local police, including the FBI, searching online sources and interviewing friends and family of Rupnow to uncover the motivations behind her actions. The police have stated that they are still trying to understand if this was a targeted attack and whether it had been premeditated.

While the origins of the firearms used in the incident are still unknown, authorities have not ruled out potential charges against Rupnow’s parents, who are cooperating with the investigation. Court records indicated a lack of criminal background for both parents, who had shared custody arrangements.

Abundant Life Christian School serves around 420 students from preschool through high school. Community members, like Adam Rostad, former student and family supporter, are stepping up during this challenging time, organizing efforts to provide meals and assistance to those affected.

“Bullets don’t really care what your faith is, or if you have one,” Rostad reflected, emphasizing the indiscriminate nature of violence.

As the community navigates its grief and confusion, the hope remains for healing and support for all those impacted by this unimaginable tragedy.
