Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi underwent hip replacement surgery on Saturday at a military hospital in Germany following an accident during an event in Luxembourg, where she was attending with a delegation of congressional members.
Pelosi, who is 84 years old, is reportedly “well on the mend,” according to a statement from her spokesperson, Ian Krager. She expressed her gratitude to the staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, as well as those at the hospital in Luxembourg, for their “excellent care and kindness” during her treatment.
The former Speaker was in Europe as part of a bipartisan congressional group commemorating the 80th anniversary of the historic Battle of the Bulge from World War II. It was during this trip that she experienced a fall and sustained a hip fracture, as revealed by individuals familiar with the situation who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the injury.
Among her congressional companions on the trip was Representative Michael McCaul from Texas, who took to social media on Friday to wish Pelosi a “speedy recovery.” Photographs from the event captured the two lawmakers together, including one where they were seen holding hands at the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg.
Pelosi has had a long and distinguished career in Congress, having initially been elected in 1987. Though she stepped down from her leadership role two years ago, she continues to serve in Congress and was reelected to represent her San Francisco district last November.
