This incident occurred just nine weeks after a previous attempt on his life where he was shot during a rally in Pennsylvania. U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire on Sunday after spotting an individual with a firearm near Trump’s golf club while he was golfing. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the suspect fled in an SUV before being apprehended by local law enforcement officials.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was filmed by the Associated Press in Kyiv in 2022 during a demonstration at Independence Square, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. Routh, who has never served in the Ukrainian army, has periodically contacted an international legion with what has been described as delusional ideas. Ukrainian officials have denied any connection to Routh and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law.
Following the incident, leaders from Trump’s campaign commended the Secret Service for promptly responding and ensuring the safety of the former president. A bipartisan task force in Congress, investigating the previous assassination attempt on Trump, has requested a briefing from the Secret Service regarding the Florida situation. The task force expressed deep concern about political violence in all its forms.
It remains uncertain if the recent events will affect Trump’s campaign schedule. Despite the incident, Trump had plans to speak about cryptocurrency and participate in events in Michigan and New York. Prior to this incident, Trump had been on a West Coast tour, including a rally in Las Vegas and a fundraiser in Utah. It is noted that he frequently spends his mornings playing golf at one of his clubs in Florida. Law enforcement officials, speaking on anonymity, revealed that Ryan Wesley Routh was the individual pointing a rifle into Trump’s golf club, and investigations are ongoing to establish motive behind the attempted assassination.
