A man is facing allegations for allegedly igniting a fire at a strip mall in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, which houses a congressional office, claiming his actions were a response to the federal government’s ban on the widely used TikTok platform.
The controversy escalated after Republican Representative Glenn Grothman cast his vote in favor of a legislative bill last April that required TikTok’s parent company, which is based in China, to divest its U.S. operations by a specified deadline.
Firefighters received reports of the fire around 1 a.m. Luckily, the building was empty at the time, and there were no reported injuries. According to police accounts, the blaze originated outside the structure, causing relatively minor damage before emergency responders were able to swiftly bring it under control.
Authorities have taken a 19-year-old man from Menasha into custody, although his identity has not been made public. He is set to face arson charges after being seen near the location, where he was allegedly observing the flames.
Representative Grothman acknowledged the incident but refrained from making any immediate statements regarding the situation.
