Three former officers are facing charges in connection with the beating death of Tyre Nichols. The officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith, reportedly did not adhere to Memphis Police Department training policies when they allegedly assaulted Nichols after a traffic stop in January 2023. Lt. Larnce Wright, who trained the officers, testified during their federal trial, indicating that their actions during the incident did not align with departmental protocols.
Jurors had the opportunity to view footage from police pole cameras and body-worn cameras showing Nichols being beaten by the officers. Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, left the courtroom upon witnessing the violent video. She expressed that she had intentionally avoided watching any recordings of the attack since they were made public last year.
During the trial, Lt. Wright highlighted that the officers should have employed less aggressive tactics, such as armbars and wrist locks, to handcuff Nichols instead of resorting to punches, kicks, and the use of a baton. He also mentioned that the officers failed to intervene or call for a supervisor to stop the excessive force being used.
The officers can be heard in the body camera footage repeatedly instructing Nichols to comply with commands, even after they had restrained him, and using unnecessary force when he posed no threat. Prosecutors emphasized that the officers appeared to be punishing Nichols for fleeing the traffic stop, rather than ensuring his safety and well-being.
Nichols, who passed away three days after the incident, succumbed to head injuries inflicted during the altercation. The five officers, all members of the disbanded Scorpion Unit crime suppression team, have been terminated for violating departmental policies. They are facing charges including second-degree murder in state court.
Wells expressed her desire for justice, hoping for guilty verdicts against the officers and for her son’s true character to be recognized, contrary to the negative portrayal following the incident. The trial continues with Martin and Mills, who have already pleaded guilty, expected to testify for the prosecution.
