Counties in Georgia call on state elections board to halt rule adjustments before November

County election officials in Georgia are voicing their concerns and appealing to the State Election Board to refrain from making additional rule changes leading up to the November election. The officials fear that continuous adjustments to the rules could cause unnecessary confusion among poll workers and voters.

The State Election Board has been reviewing various rule proposals in recent months, with several already being approved. During a meeting on Monday, a new rule regarding the certification of election results was adopted, with plans discussed to review more rules on September 20. Any rules approved during the September meeting would come into effect 20 days later, coinciding with the distribution of overseas and military ballots and the commencement of in-person early voting.

The Georgia Association of Voter Registration and Election Officials (GAVREO) expressed deep concerns about the potential disruptions that additional rule changes could cause to the ongoing training and preparation of poll workers. The organization emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the electoral process and ensuring that those managing the polls and overseeing the election are not unduly pressured.

Members of the State Election Board, including the nonpartisan chair and the sole Democrat on the panel, have shared reservations about implementing new rules so close to the November election. However, three Republican members, supported by former President Donald Trump, have been in favor of adopting new rules despite the concerns raised.

GAVREO urged the State Election Board to carefully assess the potential repercussions of introducing further rule changes and prioritize the smooth operation and integrity of the upcoming election. The organization emphasized the importance of providing clarity and consistency in the rules to ensure a successful and error-free voting process for poll workers, election administrators, and voters alike.
