RIO DE JANEIRO — On Monday, Rio de Janeiro experienced its highest temperature in at least ten years, with the mercury soaring to 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit), prompting many locals to head to the beach in search of relief from the sweltering heat.
This marked the peak temperature recorded since the city implemented a climate alert system more than a decade ago. The second-highest temperature during this period was noted at 43.8°C in November 2023.
Due to the extreme heat, city officials have issued a heat alert for the following days and have established hydration stations throughout the area. They are also preparing the public health services to manage a rise in cases related to heat stress.
Despite the soaring temperatures, Rio’s Mayor Eduardo Paes announced on Sunday that Carnival celebrations, which are set to begin in the coming weeks, would not be canceled. He did, however, advise participants to exercise caution while enjoying the festivities.
The issue of heat during large public events has become a matter of significant concern, particularly following the tragic death of a Taylor Swift fan at a concert in Rio during the previous heat wave in November 2023.
