TORONTO — Bryce Harper’s return to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup was marked by an explosive start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Harper contributed one of two home runs for the Phillies during a six-run first inning attack off right-hander Bowden Francis in the opening game of their series on Tuesday.

This was Harper’s first plate appearance since being struck by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves’ pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of their matchup last week, marking his ninth home run of the season. “I felt good, body feels good,” Harper remarked. “Arm is still a little sore, but I feel good.”

Having missed five games due to a bruised right elbow, Harper’s return saw him finishing 1 for 3 with two walks and two runs scored, helping the Phillies break a four-game losing streak with an 8-3 victory. “He makes our lineup so much better,” noted Phillies manager Rob Thomson. Without Harper, the Phillies had previously suffered a 1-4 record, falling out of the top spot in the NL East.

Harper, batting after a two-run homer by Trea Turner, sent the ball 394 feet resulting in both shots landing in Philadelphia’s right field bullpen. Turner commented on Harper’s influence, stating, “He affects so many different people in so many different ways. That’s why he’s so good.”

Despite the home run and his solid performance, Harper’s elbow—which underwent Tommy John surgery following the 2022 World Series—continues to be a sensitive matter. “Yeah, there’s swelling,” Harper explained. “I think it’s going to take a minute to go down but I thought today was a good day for me to get back out there. It’s definitely bruised still and all that stuff, but we’re working through it.” To safeguard his elbow, Harper wore a protective guard during Tuesday’s game. “Felt a little bulky but felt good,” he said.
