TORONTO โ€” Bryce Harperโ€™s return to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup was marked by an explosive start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Harper contributed one of two home runs for the Phillies during a six-run first inning attack off right-hander Bowden Francis in the opening game of their series on Tuesday.

This was Harperโ€™s first plate appearance since being struck by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Bravesโ€™ pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of their matchup last week, marking his ninth home run of the season. โ€œI felt good, body feels good,โ€ Harper remarked. โ€œArm is still a little sore, but I feel good.โ€

Having missed five games due to a bruised right elbow, Harperโ€™s return saw him finishing 1 for 3 with two walks and two runs scored, helping the Phillies break a four-game losing streak with an 8-3 victory. โ€œHe makes our lineup so much better,โ€ noted Phillies manager Rob Thomson. Without Harper, the Phillies had previously suffered a 1-4 record, falling out of the top spot in the NL East.

Harper, batting after a two-run homer by Trea Turner, sent the ball 394 feet resulting in both shots landing in Philadelphiaโ€™s right field bullpen. Turner commented on Harperโ€™s influence, stating, โ€œHe affects so many different people in so many different ways. Thatโ€™s why heโ€™s so good.โ€

Despite the home run and his solid performance, Harperโ€™s elbowโ€”which underwent Tommy John surgery following the 2022 World Seriesโ€”continues to be a sensitive matter. โ€œYeah, thereโ€™s swelling,โ€ Harper explained. โ€œI think itโ€™s going to take a minute to go down but I thought today was a good day for me to get back out there. Itโ€™s definitely bruised still and all that stuff, but weโ€™re working through it.โ€ To safeguard his elbow, Harper wore a protective guard during Tuesdayโ€™s game. โ€œFelt a little bulky but felt good,โ€ he said.
