In Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. had an outstanding performance by hitting a grand slam and a three-run homer, contributing to his remarkable tally of eight RBIs. As a result, Miami’s No. 3 seed team secured a decisive 14-1 victory over Columbia during the Hattiesburg Regional on Saturday night.

Pitcher Griffin Hugus achieved a complete game for Miami, boasting a record of 6-7. He effectively restricted Columbia to just one run on eight hits, while walking one and striking out nine batters.

With this victory, Miami (33-24) has advanced to the championship round. They will face either Columbia or host Southern Miss, who competed earlier in the bracket. Previously, Southern Miss, the No. 4 national seed, had been outplayed by the fourth-seeded Tigers with a score of 11-4 in their opening match on Friday. To claim the title in this double-elimination tournament, either Southern Miss or Columbia would need to topple the Hurricanes twice.

During the game, Daniel Cuvet set the pace by hitting a two-RBI double off Columbia’s starting pitcher Thomas Santana, whose season record stands at 5-4. This achievement marked Cuvet’s 81st RBI this season, making him just the sixth player in Miami’s program history to exceed 80 RBIs in a single campaign.

Max Galvin also made significant contributions to Miami’s win, amassing three hits, including both a double and a home run, alongside two RBIs and scoring three runs.

Despite Columbia’s efforts, their highlight was Anton Lazits’s solo home run in the fourth inning, though it wasn’t enough to overcome Miami’s dominance. Columbia finished the night with a record of 30-18.
