PHOENIX – The Washington Nationals concluded an inspiring month of May with a powerful performance by cruising to an 11-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. The game began with a stunning start as the Nationals accumulated 10 runs in the opening inning, setting the tone for the rest of the night.
The offensive explosion saw the Nationals’ first 11 batters reach base, resulting in nine runs before the Diamondbacks could secure their first out. This impressive feat ranks as the second-most successful inning by any team since 1961. A similar occurrence took place when the Boston Red Sox managed 10 runs before recording their first out against the Florida Marlins on June 27, 2003.
“I’ve witnessed some impressive inning starts, but this one was remarkable,” commented Nationals first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. “It’s uplifting to put up such numbers against a strong major league starter right from the get-go. It’s a rarity.” Washington rounded off May with a 15-12 record, marking their first winning month since August of last year.
Lowe, a key player from the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, remarked on the growing confidence within the team, as their record now stands at 28-30. “This could be the norm,” Lowe added, “The aim is to compete and win each day. That’s the purpose, not losing.” During the first inning, Luis Garcia Jr. contributed significantly with a double, a fielder’s choice, and three RBIs, as the Nationals sent 16 hitters to the plate, stretching the inning to a full 30 minutes for the Diamondbacks to manage three outs.
“Our at-bats today were well executed across the board,” noted Nats manager Dave Martinez, “We spread the hits all around, and tonight it paid off with the runs we desperately needed.” Diamondbacks starter Brandon Pfaadt experienced a challenging start, facing eight consecutive batters without securing an out and conceding eight earned runs. This led to his ERA escalating from 3.90 to 5.05.
The Diamondbacks are feeling the heat, having lost nine of their last 10 games, while Washington enjoys a prosperous run, securing victory in 11 of their last 15 matches and consistently scoring nine or more runs in their previous four encounters.
