HOUSTON — During Saturday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros star Jose Altuve exited in the third inning due to tightness in his right hamstring. The Astros eventually fell to the Reds with a score of 13-9.
The decision to replace Altuve came after he indicated discomfort following a brisk run from first base, where he reached on a walk, to home plate during a scoring play facilitated by teammate Yainer Diaz’s single. Altuve was substituted with pinch-hitter Brendan Rodgers when the Astros were down 12-1.
Manager Joe Espada mentioned that they would reassess Altuve’s condition. “It’s just kind of sore, the hamstring, so we’re going to reevaluate him and we’re going to see how he feels,” Espada explained, adding that Altuve expressed tightness following his sprint from the first inning.
The 35-year-old veteran is having a steady season, currently batting .259 with four home runs and 14 RBIs. While Altuve has primarily contributed as a left fielder this year, he was positioned at second base during Saturday’s matchup.
