CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox made a key roster change by calling up infielder Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte, just in time for his first-ever major league game against the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. At 26 years old, Elko took to the field as the starting first baseman and was positioned eighth in the batting order. Impressive in Charlotte, Elko posted a .348 batting average, hit 10 home runs, and drove in 23 runs over the course of 31 games. His journey to the majors began when the White Sox selected him in the 10th round of the 2022 amateur draft, following his significant role in leading Ole Miss to an NCAA championship victory.
In tandem with Elko’s elevation, the team decided to designate infielder Nick Maton for assignment. This roster adjustment reflects the White Sox’s current strategy as they continue to refine and optimize their team lineup.
Additionally, the White Sox made further moves to bolster their pitching strength by claiming right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gómez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. To make room for Gómez, outfielder Greg Jones was released from the roster. Gómez has had a mixed performance this season, recording a 1-1 record, a 6.28 ERA, and one save, alongside 11 strikeouts spread across nine relief outings with the Yankees and Dodgers. After being claimed off waivers from New York, he was recently designated for assignment by the Dodgers on May 6.
Despite their struggles and holding the last position in the American League with an 11-28 record, the White Sox managed to break a four-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over Miami on Friday. Their recent adjustments indicate a strategic push to change their fortune as the season progresses.
