In a high-scoring affair at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California, the Athletics triumphed over the San Diego Padres with a decisive 10-4 win on Tuesday night. This victory marks the A’s first win in their temporary home setup, having lost their previous four games.
Dylan Cease, who had a challenging outing, gave up a personal worst of nine earned runs. The Padres had initially taken a 3-0 lead, but Cease’s struggles in the first inning with two outs allowed the Athletics to seize momentum by scoring six runs. He completed his four innings stint allowing nine hits and three walks, causing his ERA to balloon to 7.98. Notably, he had previously surrendered eight earned runs against the A’s while playing for the Chicago White Sox in 2023.
The Padres faced additional setbacks, as they placed center fielder Jackson Merrill on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain ahead of the game. Compounding the team’s troubles, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jake Cronenworth exited early following apparent injuries sustained during their swings, with Cronenworth leaving in the third inning and Tatis the fifth.
The Athletics, poised to move to a Las Vegas stadium by 2028, broke an eight-game losing streak versus the Padres. Despite Manny Machado’s first home run of the season igniting an early lead for San Diego, Oakland responded with strong performances from JJ Bleday and Gio Urshela, each driving in three runs.
In a key sequence, Bleday’s two-run double, followed by scoring on Miguel Andujar’s single, along with Urshela’s own two-run double scoring on Max Muncy’s single, ensured Oakland’s dominance. The Padres’ defense faltered as left fielder Oscar Gonzalez misplayed Jacob Wilson’s single, allowing two unearned runs. Wilson, showing impressive form, had three hits, raising his average to .400 and extending a 12-game hitting streak, the longest for the Athletics since 2015.
The highlight for Oakland was their Nos. 5-9 batters, who collectively managed 11 hits from 19 at-bats, scoring eight RBIs and runs. This formidable lineup was instrumental in reversing their home losing record.
Looking ahead, Randy Vásquez (0-1, 1.69 ERA) is set to pitch for the Padres in the series finale on Wednesday, facing off against Osvaldo Bido (1-0, 2.70 ERA) for the Athletics.
