LONDON – Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, is edging closer to securing a new deal with the current leader of the Premier League standings.
In recent comments, Van Dijk mentioned, “There is progress, yeah,” highlighting ongoing internal talks. He noted, “Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.”
As Van Dijk approaches his 34th birthday in July, his contract, as well as those of Liverpool key players Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is set to expire following a potentially triumphant season in the league title race.
While many anticipate Alexander-Arnold’s possible move to Real Madrid, Van Dijk and Salah are more likely to continue their journey with Liverpool, which began in the 2017-18 season. The trio has a history of success, having clinched a Champions League trophy in 2019 and the Premier League championship the subsequent year.
“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again,” Van Dijk expressed after Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Fulham on Sunday.
This recent loss marks only the second league defeat for Liverpool but adds to a string of three losses in their last four matches across various competitions. Despite this, Liverpool maintains an 11-point edge over second-place Arsenal, with only seven league matches remaining, and they are set to face West Ham at home next Sunday.
Van Dijk affirmed the team’s determination, saying, “That’s definitely the mentality in our group, that the job is not done and now we just have to recover from this physically and mentally and put our minds on West Ham at home.”
